Perfume Blending Class: Learn the Craft of Balance

A perfume blending class teaches the quiet craft behind a beautiful scent, so it suits curious minds. Blending means combining several aromas so they read as one. It sounds simple, yet balance is everything.

So we focus on how blends are built. First, you will learn the bases, the notes, and the small adjustments that change a perfume. Then you spend about 40 minutes blending your own, with guidance beside you.

What a perfume blending class really teaches

Every blend starts from a base. A base is the foundation a perfume is built on. Ours also come in floral, fresh, musk, sophisticated, gourmand, and masculine. Gourmand simply means sweet, like vanilla or caramel.

Next come the notes. Top notes are the bright scents you smell first, and they fade soonest. Middle notes, also called the heart, bloom after that. Finally, base notes are the deep scents that linger longest, so they anchor your blend.

After that, you learn scent balance. That means adjusting strength so no single note shouts. For example, one extra drop of a rich absolute can tip a blend. An absolute is a highly concentrated aroma drawn from a flower.

Blender's secret

Smell each new addition on a blotter first, which is a thin paper strip. Then decide if it belongs.

The building blocks of a perfume blending class

Each step builds on the last. Together, they turn a pile of bottles into a single, graceful scent.

Styled perfume bar showing base choices

Choose a base

First, smell the six bases and choose the one that feels like you. It shapes everything that follows.

Add top notes

Top notes give the first impression. Citrus and fresh green scents often play this role, yet they fade quickly.

Styled table of heart note materials

Build the heart

Middle notes, meanwhile, carry the character of the perfume. Florals often live here, so this is where a blend finds its personality.

Anchor with base notes

Base notes, such as musks and resins, hold a blend in place. They also help your perfume last on skin.

Guests testing balance during blending

Adjust the strength

Now you smell, compare, and tweak. Even one drop can soften a sharp edge or lift a flat blend.

Bottle the result

At last, your blend becomes an eau de parfum spray. That means a concentrated perfume, and ours is about 50% fragrance material.

Gather your group

Book a blending class at home

The Perfume Making 101 Workshop is quoted for your group of 3 or more. Then we bring every material to your home or venue in Chicagoland.

Blending exercises to try

Instructors often add a playful exercise. These three also keep the focus on balance.

One note, three waysFirst, add the same note at three strengths. Then compare how much it changes the whole blend.
Swap the baseTry one set of fragrance notes over two different bases. Guests are often surprised by the difference.
Blind comparisonPass blends around without names. Each guest describes what she smells first, then last.
Did you know?

A blend smells different after a few minutes on skin. That is why top notes and base notes matter so much.

When a perfume blending class makes sense

Blending rewards curiosity and conversation. So it suits gatherings where guests enjoy learning together.

A friends' evening

Three or more friends can book the 101 at home. Afterward, you will compare blends over dessert.

Mother and daughter

Learning side by side makes a lovely memory. Kids 5 and up are welcome in the 101, too.

Wedding weekends

The Elevated Workshop pairs deeper education with a fully staffed perfume bar.

Book clubs

Readers enjoy a different kind of story for one night, too. Each blend becomes a character.

Coworker outings

Blending sparks easy, friendly debate. For company events, the Branded tier travels nationwide.

Holiday gatherings

A December class doubles as gift making. Then guests leave with something they made by hand.

Where blending classes happen

Blending needs good light and a calm table. So most rooms work well. Choose the one your guests love.

Kitchen islands

An island gives everyone a spot, even in a busy house. Plus, it keeps conversation flowing.

Clubhouses

Condo and community clubhouses also fit midsize groups with ease.

Hotel suites

A suite works well for a weekend celebration. Usually, we simply work around the furniture.

Event venues

Larger tiers of The Fragrance Workshop suit mid-size events of 20 to 40.

Mokena studio

Opening in January 2027, our studio has a private party room for up to 40 and a kitchen.
