Make your own perfume

Make your own perfume from a scent library developed by a trained perfumer — a fragrance that doesn't exist yet. Smell, blend, bottle it and take it home the same day. Every guest leaves with a full-strength eau de parfum they made themselves.

From $500 · Fully hosted · Made in our Illinois lab

What is a perfume bar?

Make your own perfume at a perfume bar: a hosted station where you smell a library of fragrance materials, choose the ones you respond to, and blend them into a custom perfume you bottle and take home the same day. It's self-directed — you explore at your own pace, with hosts on hand to answer questions — and the whole thing usually runs one to two hours.

You'll see the same thing described as a scent bar, a fragrance workshop, a perfume making class, or somewhere to make your own custom perfume, create your own perfume or design your own fragrance. They all describe the same activity: building a personalized scent from raw materials rather than choosing one off a shelf.

Glitters & Grace brings everything you need to make your own perfume to your home or venue anywhere in Chicagoland, Milwaukee or Indianapolis. Adult perfume bars start around $500, depending on your guest count and the style of bar you choose. Everything is formulated in our own New Lenox lab using absolutes, CO₂ extracts and essential oils.

What makes us different

Closer to a fragrance counter than a craft table

The absolutes, CO₂ extracts and essential oils on our table are the same class of materials used in the fragrances you'd buy at a department store counter. That's the point. Coming to one of our bars is closer to going perfume shopping than to doing a craft — you're smelling real perfumery materials and choosing between them, the way you would in a fragrance hall.

The difference is that you're choosing rather than picking something off a shelf, and that what you end up with is strong. Every perfume made at our bars is an eau de parfum at 50–60% fragrance material to perfumer's alcohol — a generous concentration, and the reason it's still with you at the end of the day.

Glitters & Grace is run by trained perfumers, so when you make your own perfume with us, every material on the table was formulated by us in our lab in New Lenox, Illinois. When you ask what something is, you're asking the person who made it.

What we care most about

  • Trained perfumers — we formulate everything ourselves
  • The same materials as fine fragrance — absolutes, CO₂ extracts, essential oils
  • 50–60% EDP concentration — one thing, made well
  • Signature scents developed in house — and you choose which we bring, and whether they lean feminine, masculine or unisex
  • Blends can be recorded at events where the pace allows it — ask when you book

And included as standard

  • Six base styles to build on, expandable to eight or ten
  • Signage suggesting blends, so nobody stares at a blank page
  • Setup and full cleanup — never an add-on
  • No travel fees across Chicagoland, Milwaukee or Indianapolis
  • Ingredient information on request, always, in advance
  • Certificates of insurance for your venue at no charge

None of it is complicated. It's just what happens when the person who built the scent library also made everything sitting in it — and when the materials are the real ones.

What it costs

Perfume bars start around $500

What it costs to make your own perfume depends on your guest count and the style of bar you want. We quote every event rather than running a fixed grid, because no two look the same.

What moves the price

  • How many guests you're expecting
  • The style of bar — how deep the experience goes and how large the scent library is
  • Whether you want custom labels with a name, date or logo
  • Hours of coverage, if it's running across a long event
  • Any additional stations alongside it

What never gets added

  • Travel fees anywhere in Chicagoland, Milwaukee or Indianapolis
  • Service fees
  • Automatic gratuity
  • Setup or cleanup charges — both are always included

Tell us the occasion, the date and roughly how many people who'd like to make their own perfume, and we'll send an itemized quote. You'll see every line, and the number on the proposal is the number you pay.

Children's parties are priced separately. Those are packaged by guest count and start at $475 as a base for up to eight — see our kids and teens party pages.

Three ways to make your own perfume

Three scent libraries, three different experiences

There are three ways to make your own perfume with us. The difference between them isn't how many people you have — it's what's on the table and how much blending you want to do.

The Signature Bar The Mini Bar The Full Bar
Scent library Up to 12 signature scents, developed in house 60+ fragrance materials 120+ fragrances, including a family of signatures
How guests choose Choose from finished signature scents and personalise from there — no blending from scratch Blend from raw materials at your own pace, with suggested blends on the signage Blend from raw materials, follow a suggested blend, or pick a signature instead
Bases to build on 6 base styles, expandable to 8 or 10 6 base styles, expandable to 8 or 10
You choose in advance Which scents we bring, and the category — feminine, masculine or unisex
Best for Events where guests want something proven, or where time at the table is short Groups who want the real blending experience without an overwhelming number of choices Celebrations where the perfume bar is the centrepiece, and mixed groups with both preferences
The Glitters and Grace scent library laid out for a perfume bar, with fragrance materials arranged by family
The scent library — arranged by family so it can be navigated without a lecture.

A base is the foundation your perfume is built on. At the Mini and Full bars you start by picking the style you want to work from — floral, masculine, fresh, musk, sophisticated or gourmand — and blend on top of it. Six come as standard, and we can expand to eight or ten for larger or more particular groups. Choosing a base first is what makes blending from sixty or a hundred and twenty materials feel manageable rather than paralysing. Signage at the bar suggests blends and combinations for anyone who'd rather be pointed in a direction than decide from scratch.

Our signature scents are developed in our own lab. They're built around what's actually being worn — some inspired by classics, some by materials trending right now — and many of them are unisex, which matters more than people expect at a mixed event. With the Signature Bar you tell us which ones to bring and whether you'd like the selection to lean feminine, masculine or unisex.

Not sure which one fits? Tell us the occasion and roughly how many people, and we'll say which we'd bring — including if that's the simpler one.

Not a party

If you want a scent built around you specifically

A perfume bar is made for a group. A fragrance consultation is the quiet version — one to one, unhurried, with a perfumer working out what suits you and building it around you.

It's the right choice if you're after a signature scent for yourself, a wedding fragrance, a considered gift, or a scent to mark something. There's no room full of guests and no queue behind you, so there's time to go back and forth until it's right.

How it works

How to make your own perfume, step by step

This is how you make your own perfume with us, start to finish. No experience needed and no fragrance vocabulary assumed — most people arrive saying they can't describe what they like, and leave wearing something they chose deliberately.

01

Smell the library

Making your own perfume starts with your nose. Sixty-plus materials laid out by family — citrus, florals, resins, woods, gourmands. You smell your way through and set aside anything that stops you. No commitment yet.

02

Find your direction

Signage at the bar suggests blends and combinations that work, so nobody has to start from a blank page. Families are grouped, everything's labelled, and our hosts are right there if you want to know what something is.

03

Blend and test

Using pipettes and testing strips, you build your blend one material at a time. Test on paper, adjust, test again. This is where most of the time goes, and it's yours to take at whatever pace you like.

04

Bottle it

Once it's right, you fill and cap your own bottle. It comes with our label as standard, or your own custom label if you've ordered them in advance. Either way it goes home with you the same day.

05

Let it settle

Wear it that night if you like, but a fresh blend keeps developing. Give it two or three days and the notes knit together — most people find it smells rounder by the end of the week.

Blending is where most of the time goes — and it runs at whatever pace you like.

One practical note: come without perfume on, and skip coffee beforehand if you can. Both make it noticeably harder to smell clearly, and the difference is bigger than people expect.

The materials

What you make your own perfume from

A custom fragrance is only as good as what goes into it. What's on our table is the same class of material that goes into the fragrances you already wear.

Our materials

  • Every perfume is an eau de parfum at 50–60% fragrance material to perfumer's alcohol
  • Absolutes, CO₂ extracts and essential oils
  • Sixty to a hundred and twenty fragrance materials, depending on the bar
  • Skin-safe and compliant with IFRA standards throughout
  • Sourced from US suppliers, including small makers in Oregon, Ohio and Michigan
  • Formulated, packed and hand-crafted in our New Lenox, Illinois lab

What you take home

  • One personalized eau de parfum spray, either 15 ml or 20 ml, bottled by you
  • Our Glitters & Grace label as standard
  • Custom labels available as an add-on, ordered in advance
  • Nothing to unpack, wash up or take away afterwards
  • Ingredient information on request, always

If you ask what's in something, we can tell you. That sounds like a small thing until you've asked somewhere else and watched them check the box.

When people make their own perfume

What people book a perfume bar for

People make their own perfume with us for all of the occasions below, and the reason is usually the same: everyone does something together, and everyone leaves with a one-of-a-kind perfume they made themselves.

Something not on the list? People have made their own perfume with us at retirements, graduations, engagement parties, book clubs and a divorce. Tell us the occasion and we'll shape it around that.

Who runs it

The person behind the scent library

Cheryl Gleason — Owner, Perfumer & Creative Director.
About the perfumer

Cheryl Gleason — Founder & Perfumer, Glitters & Grace

Cheryl is a trained perfumer and cosmetic formulator who studied perfumery under the educator Karen Gilbert. She founded Glitters & Grace and formulates every fragrance, skincare and bath product the company uses in its own lab in New Lenox, Illinois — working with absolutes, CO₂ extracts and essential oils, the materials of fine fragrance.

Glitters & Grace runs perfume bars, lip labs and skincare bars across Chicagoland, Milwaukee and Indianapolis, and operates a studio at 19060 Everett Blvd, Suite 107 in Mokena, Illinois. Cheryl personally develops the scent library used at every session.

We mention all this because when you make your own perfume, the expertise sits in a place people don't always think to look — not in the hosting, but in what's on the table. The materials, the signature scents, the way the library is arranged. Get that right and the rest looks after itself, which is where most of our work quietly goes.

FAQs

Questions people ask before booking

What makes your perfume bar different from others?

We use the same class of materials as the fragrances you'd buy at a department store counter — absolutes, CO₂ extracts and essential oils. Coming to one of our bars is closer to going perfume shopping than to doing a craft, except you're choosing rather than picking from a shelf. We're run by trained perfumers and formulate everything ourselves in our lab in New Lenox, Illinois.

The part you can measure is concentration: every perfume made at our bars is an eau de parfum at 50–60% fragrance material to perfumer's alcohol, which is why it's still with you at the end of the day. Alongside that — signature scents we've developed in house and you choose from in advance, six base styles to build on, signage suggesting blends, and blend recording at events where the pace allows.

What's the difference between a perfume bar, a scent bar and a perfume making class?

Nothing meaningful — they're different names for the same activity. A perfume bar, a scent bar, a fragrance workshop, a perfume making class and a custom fragrance experience all describe blending a bespoke perfume from raw materials with guidance.

The real differences between providers are who guides you, how many materials you can choose from, and whether they're working from raw materials or pre-mixed bases. Ours is led by a trained perfumer with sixty-plus materials, formulated in our own lab.

Will a perfumer sit with me and design a scent for me?

That's a fragrance consultation, which is a lovely thing and a different service. A perfume bar is a hosted station for a group, so with a roomful of guests everyone's working at once rather than one at a time.

What you get instead is a scent library developed by a trained perfumer, laid out so you can explore it yourself, with signage suggesting blends that work and hosts on hand for questions. Most people find they need far less help than they expected, which is usually a nice surprise.

If you do want a scent built around you specifically, we offer that as a fragrance consultation — one to one, unhurried, at our Mokena studio or your home. Consultations start at $450.

Can I make my own custom perfume, or do I pick from ones you've made?

Both are available, and you choose which. At the Mini and Full bars you create your own perfume from raw materials — pick a base style, then build on it. Nothing you make already exists, and nobody else will have it.

At the Signature Bar you choose from up to twelve finished scents we've developed in house and personalize from there. It's the better fit when there's less time at the table, or for guests who'd rather not start from scratch. The Full Bar offers both in the same room.

What is a base, and which ones can I choose from?

A base is the foundation your perfume is built on. You pick the style you want to work from — floral, masculine, fresh, musk, sophisticated or gourmand (sweet) — and then blend on top of it.

Six come as standard at the Mini and Full bars, and we can expand to eight or ten. Picking a base first is what makes blending from sixty or a hundred and twenty materials feel manageable — it gives you a direction before you start, rather than a blank page.

What's the difference between the Signature, Mini and Full bars?

The size of the scent library, and how much blending guests do. The Signature Bar offers up to 12 finished signature scents developed in our lab — guests choose and personalise rather than blending from scratch. The Mini Bar has 60+ fragrance materials to blend from. The Full Bar has 120+, including a family of signatures for anyone who'd rather not start from raw materials.

Mini and Full both include 6 bases, expandable to 8 or 10. With the Signature Bar you also choose which scents we bring and whether the selection leans feminine, masculine or unisex — many of our signatures are unisex, which tends to matter at a mixed event.

How much is a fragrance consultation?

Consultations start at $450, at our Mokena studio or at your home.

It's a different service to a perfume bar. A bar is a hosted station for a group; a consultation is one to one and unhurried, with time to work back and forth until the scent is right. People book them for a personal signature scent, a wedding fragrance, or a gift they want to get properly right. Email us and we'll talk it through before anything is booked.

How much does it cost to make your own perfume?

Adult perfume bars start around $500, depending on your guest count and the style of bar you want.

We quote each event rather than publishing a fixed grid, because no two look the same. Tell us the occasion, the date and roughly how many people and we'll send an itemized quote. There are no travel fees, no service fees and no automatic gratuity.

Two other things are priced separately: children's parties, from $475 as a base for up to eight guests, and one-to-one fragrance consultations, from $450.

How long does it take to make a perfume?

Most adult perfume bars run one to two hours, depending on the style you book. At a large reception the station runs continuously across the evening and each guest spends two to four minutes at the bar.

The blending itself takes roughly forty minutes. The rest is smelling the library, learning the structure, and bottling.

Do I need any experience with fragrance?

No — you don't need any experience to make your own perfume. Most people arrive saying they don't know how to describe what they like. That's the normal starting point, and smelling your way through the library sorts it out faster than any explanation would.

The library is laid out by family, everything is labelled, and there's signage at the bar suggesting blends and combinations that work — so if you'd rather not make every decision yourself, you don't have to. Our hosts are there throughout if you want to ask what something is. Nothing assumes you know what a chypre is or can name a base note.

Is this like buying perfume, or is it a craft activity?

Much closer to buying perfume. When you make your own perfume here, the materials on our table are the same class used in the fragrances sold at a department store counter, and what you leave with is a genuine eau de parfum at 50–60% concentration — stronger than a lot of what's on those counters.

The experience is like a fragrance hall in the sense that you're smelling real perfumery materials and deciding between them. The difference is that instead of choosing which bottle to buy, you're deciding what goes in it.

What's actually in the perfume?

Absolutes, CO₂ extracts and essential oils — the same class of materials used in the fragrances you'd buy at a department store counter. All skin-safe and compliant with IFRA standards, sourced from US suppliers, and formulated in our own New Lenox, Illinois lab.

Ingredient information is available on request, always and in advance. If you have sensitivities, tell us when you book and we'll plan around them.

Can I get the same scent again later?

Not automatically — at a standard perfume bar we don't record individual recipes. A bar moves along at a good clip with guests coming and going, and pausing to write down every blend would hold up the table.

If keeping the recipe matters to you, do mention it when you book. At slower-paced events we can build it in, and it's much easier to plan for than to add later. A fragrance consultation includes it as standard.

How big is the bottle?

15 ml or 20 ml, and it's an eau de parfum spray at 50–60% fragrance material to perfumer's alcohol. That's a genuine fragrance concentration, not a scented water or a body mist.

Everything we make is an EDP. We don't do lotions, oils or room scents — one product, made properly. Larger and additional bottles can be added at any booking; ask when you book.

Where do you travel?

You can make your own perfume anywhere in Chicagoland, greater Milwaukee or the Indianapolis metro — with no travel fee in any of those markets. Our studio is in Mokena, Illinois and our lab is in New Lenox.

That includes the city of Chicago, the North Shore, the western and northwest suburbs, the Fox Valley, Northwest Indiana and the southwest suburbs.

What ages can take part?

Adults of any age can make your own perfume with us — the bar on this page is built for grown-ups, for bridal showers, girls nights, corporate events, milestone birthdays. It's our signature offering and the majority of what we do.

We also run a separate children's version for ages 7 and up, packaged and priced differently. See our kids and teens party pages for that — it uses a different scent library chosen for younger noses.

Is it messy?

No. Perfume blending is a dry, contained activity — pipettes, small beakers and testing strips on a covered surface. It's the tidiest thing we do.

At a mobile event we bring our own linens and coverings, set up completely, and pack out with the table as we found it. Cleanup is included in the price.

How far in advance should I book?

Six to eight weeks for most Saturdays. If you want to make your own perfume in May or December, book further out — those are our busiest months and often go two to three months ahead.

Weekday and Sunday dates are usually available with much shorter notice than Saturdays. If your date is close, ask anyway — we can often make it work.

Can you put our logo or names on the bottles?

Yes, as an add-on — custom labels carry a name, a date, a monogram or a full logo, and are quoted by quantity and design. They're printed in advance, so they need ordering when you book rather than on the day.

If you'd rather not, bottles come with our own Glitters & Grace label, which people tend to like. We print in the lab rather than at the bar, so custom labels just need deciding early. They're our most popular add-on for weddings, corporate events, mitzvahs and quinceañeras, where the bottle doubles as the favor.

Do you sell gift vouchers?

Yes. They're a common gift for birthdays, Mother's Day and Christmas.

Email perfume@glittersandgrace.com and we'll arrange one, including a version you can print if it's a last-minute gift.
