Who came to blend

Most of the guests who visited the bar were women. Mothers, bridesmaids and best friends lined up early, eager to make something personal. Many came back a second time just to smell what their friends had made.

We were delighted to blend for several gentlemen too. Some made a fragrance for themselves. Others blended one for a wife or partner, choosing notes that matched a shared memory or a favorite scent.

One moment stays with me. The father of the bride sat down and chose a calming blend of lavender and cedarwood, a scent of home, made with his daughter in mind. It was quiet and sweet, and it reminded all of us why we do this work.

Then there was the couple who made matching scents. Hers leaned bright and floral, with jasmine and bergamot. His was deeper, with vetiver and black tea. Two different perfumes, made side by side, meant to be worn together.

The blending ritual and the signage

Good signage makes a perfume bar feel welcoming. At this wedding, our signs were simple and warm: Blend Your Mood. Create a Fragrance That Tells Your Story. Oak Brook Edition: Love, Grace and Glamour.

Here is how blending works at our bars. Each guest starts from a base, the foundation a perfume is built on. We offer six base styles: floral, masculine, fresh, musk, sophisticated and gourmand (sweet). From there, guests add notes they love until the blend feels right. Our hosts help at every step, and signage suggests combinations for anyone who would rather not decide from scratch.

Every finished perfume is an eau de parfum, a perfume-strength spray made at 50% fragrance material to perfumer's alcohol. We blend with absolutes, CO2 extracts and essential oils. In plain words, these are the concentrated natural extracts perfumers use, and they give a bottle real depth.

What this wedding taught us about pacing

With 180 guests, timing matters. A blending bar moves about 50 guests per hour, because each guest takes a few minutes to choose and build. Our Signature Perfume Bar is not a blending bar: guests choose from up to 12 in-house signature scents, and it moves about 85 to 100 guests per hour.

For a large reception, think about how long the bar will be open and how many guests you expect to visit. A longer window, or the Signature format, keeps the line short. If you want every guest to blend from scratch, plan the bar for cocktail hour and keep it open into the evening.

Planning your own Oak Brook wedding perfume bar

Oak Brook has grand hotel ballrooms, country clubs and private estates, and a perfume bar suits all of them. Whether the reception is at The Drake Oak Brook, Oak Brook Bath & Tennis Club or a private estate, any of our bars can sit on a table, a luxury counter or one of our candy carts, styled to match your palette.

A few details to know as you plan. Bottles come in 15 ml or 20 ml. They carry the Glitters and Grace label as standard, and custom labels with your names and date are a paid add-on, printed in advance and ordered at booking. Individual formulas are not recorded at event bars. If you want a wedding scent you can remake for years, book a one-to-one fragrance consultation, where a formula is recorded so it can be remade; it is $650.

Wedding perfume bars start at $500, quoted per event. Book early: most Saturdays need six to eight weeks, and weddings need longer. If your date is sooner, reach out anyway.
