How Does a Perfume Bar Work? Smell Everything, Then Choose
How does a perfume bar work? Simply put, guests walk up, smell beautiful materials, build or choose a scent with a host's help, and leave with a bottle of perfume. My favorite advice for every guest fits in two words: smell everything.
I am a trained perfumer, and I designed our bars so anyone can enjoy them, from a nervous first-timer to a fragrance lover. Here is how it works from the guest's side of the table, and from the host's.

How does a perfume bar work at an event?
A perfume bar is a styled station with fragrance materials, bottles and trained hosts. Guests visit one or two at a time. Each one spends a few minutes exploring, then walks away with a finished perfume.
We offer three formats, and they work a little differently. The Mini and Full bars are blending bars. The Signature bar is a choose-your-favorite bar. Both are described below, and our perfume bar styles page compares them side by side.
Take your time. Ask questions. Tell your host about perfumes you have loved before. It helps them guide you.
Ready to bring one to your event?
Most Saturdays need six to eight weeks, and May, September, December and weddings need longer. If your date is sooner, reach out anyway. We have a large team of hosts and can often fit you in on short notice.
Step 1: Choose your base
On a blending bar, every perfume starts from a base. A base is the foundation a perfume is built on. It gives the scent its body and helps it last.
We offer six base styles: floral, masculine, fresh, musk, sophisticated and gourmand (a sweet, edible-smelling style, think vanilla or caramel). Your host will ask what you usually like and point you toward one or two to try.
Step 2: Add the notes you love
Next comes the fun part. You smell individual fragrance materials and pick the ones that make you smile. Perfumers talk about top notes, the bright first impression such as citrus and herbs, and heart notes, the richer middle such as florals and spices.
Our materials include absolutes, CO2 extracts and essential oils. In plain words, these are the concentrated natural extracts perfumers use. The Mini bar offers 60+ fragrance materials and the Full bar offers 120+.
Not sure where to start? Signage on the bar suggests combinations, and the Full bar includes a family of signature scents for guests who would rather not blend from scratch.
Step 3: Bottle it and take it home
Once your blend is ready, your host pours it into a bottle, and it is bagged for you. Every guest leaves with an eau de parfum, a perfume-strength spray made at 50% fragrance material to perfumer's alcohol. Bottles come in 15 ml or 20 ml.
A little tip: your perfume may smell even rounder after a day, as the notes settle together. Spray it on skin, not just paper, and let it warm up.
How the Signature Perfume Bar works
The Signature Perfume Bar skips blending. Before the event, the host picks up to 12 of our in-house signature scents and decides whether the selection leans feminine, masculine or unisex. Guests smell them all, choose a favorite and take it home.
Because there is no blending, it moves about 85 to 100 guests per hour. Blending bars move about 50 guests per hour. That is why big receptions and conferences often choose Signature, while showers and birthdays choose a blending bar.
How it works for the host
Our team arrives one hour before your start time to set up. We bring station signage, materials and bottles. Linens, lace and customized signage are available as add-ons. Your venue provides tables, or we bring them at $30 each. Any bar can sit on a table, a luxury counter or one of our candy carts.
During the event, our hosts guide every guest. Afterward, we pack out and clean up. We serve groups from 5 to 5,000 and scale hosts to the room. Perfume bars suit bridal and baby showers, birthdays, ladies' nights, corporate events and boutique pop-ups. Kids ages 5 and up can join, with age-appropriate formulas.
One thing to know: individual formulas are not recorded at event perfume bars. If you want a scent you can remake, book a one-to-one fragrance consultation. It is $650, and your formula is kept on file.
How booking works
- Share the basics. Send your date, venue, rough guest count and occasion through the booking form.
- Get your proposal. We reply within two business days with an itemized proposal. There is no charge and no obligation.
- Sign and set your count. After you sign, your guest count can go up but not down, so book your lowest expected count.
- Meet your team. A week before your event, you receive your host details and arrival time.
- Enjoy the party. We arrive one hour before start time to set up, host every guest, then pack out and clean up.
