Summer and Fall Wedding Scents: How a Bespoke Fragrance Becomes Your Most Lasting Memory

Summer and fall wedding scents, explained by a professional perfumer, plus the Chicago couple who wore their wedding day.

Summer and fall wedding scents are the detail your guests won't see in a single photo, yet they will remember it longest. I'm Cheryl Gleason, a professional perfumer, and I have created hundreds of bespoke wedding fragrances for couples across the country. In this post, I'll share why scent matters so much on your wedding day, how to choose notes for a summer or fall celebration, and the story of one Chicago couple who commissioned two.

Why scent is the memory that lasts

Scent is a curious thing. A single breath of a familiar perfume can carry you back decades in an instant. That's not just romance; it's how the brain is built. As Harvard researchers explain, odors take a direct route to the limbic system, including the amygdala and the hippocampus, the areas tied to emotion and memory.

In other words, smell is one of the strongest memory triggers we have. So when your wedding has a scent of its own, every future encounter with that fragrance brings the day rushing back, for you and for your guests.

Did you know?

Smell signals reach the brain's emotion and memory centers faster than most other senses. That's why a scent can bring back a feeling before you even name the memory.

What a bespoke wedding scent includes

A bespoke wedding scent is a fragrance created only for you. Then it becomes part of the whole celebration in three beautiful ways.

In the airFirst, your signature scent is diffused through the air of your venue, so guests are welcomed by your fragrance the moment they arrive. Wedding venue scenting is subtle, never heavy.
On the two of youNext, the bride and groom each wear the scent, or two complementary scents, all day long. Many couples choose a his and hers wedding fragrance built from the same notes.
In every guest's handsFinally, each guest receives a beautiful crystal bottle of your scent, with a label that forever remembers your day. See our perfume wedding favors.

Prefer to let guests blend their own? Then add a hosted mobile perfume bar to your reception, where every guest creates a scent to take home. Couples who want an intimate gathering often choose a private perfume bar in Chicago for the rehearsal dinner, too.

Summer and fall wedding scents: choosing your notes

Every season has a mood, and summer and fall wedding scents should match it. For that reason, I start every consultation by asking when and where you'll marry.

SummerBright, luminous notes feel fresh in warm air: neroli, bergamot, jasmine, gardenia, and soft musk.
Late summer into fallThen the palette deepens, with fig, rose, iris, and a touch of sandalwood.
FallFinally, warm, enveloping notes feel right in cooler air: sandalwood, amber, vanilla, and gentle spice.
A perfumer's note

I compose with absolutes, CO₂ extracts, and essential oils. An absolute is a highly concentrated aroma drawn from a flower, such as jasmine. As a result, the scent feels alive on the skin, not flat. Full ingredient details are also on our allergens and safety page.

A Chicago love story in scent: Aiden and Mari

Aiden and Mari came to me in the early planning stages of their June wedding in Chicago. They wanted the day to feel personal in every sense, and they loved the idea of two signature scents: a perfume for Mari and a cologne for Aiden.

Together, we chose three focus notes. Neroli, the bright, honeyed blossom of the bitter orange tree, opened both scents with sunshine. Jasmine sambac, a creamy and heady jasmine, brought romance. Meanwhile, sandalwood gave both fragrances a soft, warm base that would linger long after the last dance.

The result was a neroli jasmine sandalwood perfume for Mari and a matching cologne for Aiden. In fact, it's a lovely example of how summer and fall wedding scents can share notes, since neroli feels like June while sandalwood carries warmth into autumn.

NeroliBright, honeyed, and sunlit. It's the blossom of the bitter orange tree, and it gave both scents their June glow.
Jasmine sambacCreamy, heady, and deeply romantic. Also called Arabian jasmine, it became the heart of the day.
SandalwoodSoft, warm, and enduring. As a result, both fragrances settled into the same gentle base.

From those three notes, we created a rich perfume and a refined cologne. Because they share the same foundation, the two scents complement each other beautifully, yet each one is unmistakably its wearer's own. On the day, their fragrance filled the air, Aiden and Mari each wore theirs, and every guest went home with a crystal bottle labeled with the couple's names and date.

Their formula, on record forever

Here is my favorite part of creating summer and fall wedding scents. Aiden and Mari's formulas are kept on record, so they can reorder their wedding scents at any time. So on their first anniversary, their tenth, or any ordinary Tuesday, they can wear the scent of their wedding day again.

Good to know

Every bespoke wedding scent we create is kept on file. That way, you can reorder it for anniversaries, gifts for your wedding party, or simply because you miss it. To reorder, simply contact us or call 815-418-6740.

How to plan summer and fall wedding scents

  • 2. Explore the notesThen I'll compose options for you to smell, and we'll refine them together until they feel like you.
  • 3. Plan the detailsNext, we confirm venue scenting with your venue and design your crystal bottle labels. Labels are printed in advance, so allow about four weeks.
  • 4. CelebrateFinally, your scent fills the room, you each wear yours, and every guest takes a bottle home.

Many brides also start the scent story early. For example, a bridal shower perfume bar lets guests blend their own perfume, while a bath and body bar makes a relaxing shower favor. Plus, a mother daughter perfume bar is a sweet way to spend time together before the big day.

Summer and fall wedding scents FAQs

What are the best summer and fall wedding scents?

For summer, bright notes such as neroli, bergamot, and white florals feel fresh in the heat. For fall, warmer notes such as sandalwood, amber, and vanilla feel rich and cozy. A bespoke scent can blend both, as Aiden and Mari's did.

Can the bride and groom have two different scents?

Yes. Many couples choose a perfume and a cologne built from the same few notes, so the two scents complement each other without being identical.

How do guests receive the wedding scent?

Each guest can take home a crystal bottle of your scent with a custom label that remembers your wedding day. Labels are printed in advance, so allow about four weeks.

Can our venue be scented with our fragrance?

Yes. We diffuse your signature scent through the air of your venue, and we coordinate the details with your venue's event team in advance.

Can we reorder our wedding scent later?

Yes. Every formula is kept on record, so you can reorder your scent for anniversaries, gifts, or simply because you miss it.

Do you create wedding scents outside Chicago?

Yes. Our founder creates bespoke wedding scents for couples all over the country, beginning with a private fragrance consultation.
